Press Release: 2nd Annual Citizenship Grant Offered by Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Nonprofit
Citizenship Grant Offered by Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Nonprofit
LOS ANGELES – Organization of Chinese Americans-Greater Los Angeles chapter (OCA-GLA) is awarding a $675 naturalization grant to assist to one qualified individual in the L.A. County in applying for U.S. citizenship. This one-time grant will provide financial assistance towards application fees, while also giving the recipient the opportunity to receive assistance from the Asian Pacific American Legal Center throughout the naturalization process. “OCA-GLA is proud to be able to offer the Mentored Path to Citizenship Grant again this year. The Great Recession has affected so many in our nation, including working-class immigrants. Now more than ever, financial assistance to worthy and deserving immigrants is needed to ensure that the American Dream is still attainable.” said OCA-GLA president Bryant Yang. “Applying for citizenship can be a complicated process. We want to do what we can to help all interested individuals ” said APALC executive director Stewart Kwoh. Mrs. and Mr. Cabobos, who were last year’s recipients of the grant, felt that the grant was incredibly helpful to their path of citizenship, and welcomed the collaboration of the two Asian Pacific American non-profit organizations. “Mentored Path to Citizenship Grant is a great way to acquire U.S. Citizenship. OCA-GLA in partnership with APALC really helps less fortunate immigrants like us.” The written application, which may be found on www.oca-gla.org or by calling the office at 213-250-9888, is due on September 17th, 2010. Applicants must show proof of residency in Los Angeles County and demonstrate eligibility to become a U.S. citizen. Candidates will be interviewed in a confidential screening process by OCA-GLA with assistance by APALC. Founded in 1973, Organization of Chinese Americans is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. Since its 1991 inception, OCA-GLA has worked with partners like APALC to assist the greater L.A. area in community projects while also fostering a sense of civic duty and awareness. For further questions, please contact OCA-GLA’s office at (213) 250-9888. | May 2, 2009 | ||
| 4:00 pm | to | 6:00 pm |

“WHO KILLED VINCENT CHIN?”
On June 9 1982, at the height of anti-Japanese fervor in the U.S., Vincent Chin, a Chinese American draftsman, was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat by two autoworkers, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. Chin had been celebrating the last days of his bachelorhood in a Detroit bar when he got into an altercation with Ebens and Nitz. When Ebens and Nitz were sentenced to pay a fine and put on probation without having to serve jail sentences, the Asian American community rallied to bring the case to federal court, claiming that Ebens and Nitz violated Chin’s civil rights.
Christine Choy and Renee Tajima’s Academy Award-nominated documentary explores the Vincent Chin story, raising questions about the complexity of race relations, immigrant life, and labor hostilities during a period of U.S. auto industry recession and a “trade war” with Japan. The filmmakers offer no conclusions of their own, but through a combination of news footage and interviews with witnesses, Chin’s family, and Ebens and Nitz and their families, they weave a nuanced and thought-provoking story.
(USA, 1987) Video, 89 min, Color, Documentary, English

OCA COMMENDS APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL SHINSEKI TO LEAD VETERANS AFFAIRS
Washington, DC – On December 7, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama announced that retired General Eric Shinseki will be his appointee for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. OCA, a national Asian Pacific American social justice organization, applauds the selection of Shinseki, who, if confirmed, will become the first Asian Pacific American to hold this post.
“OCA is pleased that President-elect Obama has added General Shinseki to his talented and diverse Cabinet,” said OCA National President Ginny Gong. “Upon his confirmation, we look forward to working with General Shinseki to acknowledge and serve all our veterans.”
In 2003, OCA honored General Shinseki in his home state of Hawaii for his public service and dedication to the country and to the Asian Pacific American community with the OCA Spirit of America Award during OCA’s 30th Annual National Convention.
Shinseki is a former Army Chief of Staff and 38-year Army veteran who served two combat tours in Vietnam. He is the highest ranked Asian Pacific American military official in the history of the United States.
“OCA has a long-standing commitment to serving and honoring our veterans, including the countless Asian Pacific American soldiers who served the United States from the Civil War to World War II to the Iraq War,” said Michael Lin, OCA executive director. “OCA strongly believes General Shinseki’s appointment affirms not only his personal sacrifices for the United States, but the contributions of Asian Pacific American veterans throughout history.”
